DIY Advent Wreath with Painted Rocks

DIY Advent Wreath with Painted Rocks

This is a really simple and rustic DIY advent wreath centerpiece, and it costs next to nothing to make.  You'll need a good assortment of rocks, and smooth ones work the best.  Beach stones or river rocks would be lovely.  I dug mine up in the backyard, and just gave them a rinse.  For the design you can use a little brush and some acrylic paint, but I just used a white paint pen from the craft store.  There is a whole rainbow of these paint pens available, and you can get creative with your color choice.  I think a mint green would be amazing, or even metallic silver and gold.  Be sure to get a fine point tip so you can draw a delicate design.

Supplies:

  • Several dozen rocks and pebbles under 4 inches long
  • paint pen
  • Candles

Step 1: Collect and clean smooth-ish stones.  My backyard produced a nice assortment of glacial stones without too many fractures or pits in the surface.  I selected rocks under 4 inches in length. I suppose you could do this with any size stone, and just scale the wreath up or down depending on what you've got.

Step 2: The pine motif is essentially the same on each rock, with just slight variations made to keep it interesting.  Start by drawing the center of the pine branch, slightly curved.  If you have enough room on your rock, draw two or three of them. Draw the little pine needles along each side of the center stems.

Step 3: Continue on, and draw pine branches on each rock.  Small rocks get single branches, and larger, or oddly-shaped rocks get multiples.  Always draw the branch in the same direction, with the same amount of curve.  When these are arranged, the curve will help unify the image of the wreath.

Step 4: With all of your stones marked, begin arranging them by finding the largest stones, and setting them out in a circle.  Then, fill-in the spaces with smaller stones.  Make sure that all of the "branches" are facing in the same direction. Stack a few of them to give it dimension.

Add some candles in vintage jello molds filled with pebbles, and it becomes an a lovely advent wreath.

There you have it!  So simple!  This would look so nice in the center of a simple holiday table or in the living room.
